I want to HACK

Apply by 10/10/2025

Have you heard all this talk about “genAI”, “agents”, or just seen a bunch of weirdly shiny produced videos on social media? Have you seen people talk about how AI has completely changed their workflow, but you’re confused cause it hasn’t changed yours at all?
Out-Of-Pocket and Google are joining forces for a one-day hackathon focused on solving healthcare problems and dreaming up all new ones.
We’re going to work with the whole new suite of Google AI products: prototyping apps with conversations, create automations you didn’t think were possible, and potentially save you hours at your job while you debate if the Turing Test matters anymore.

If you’ve never been to a hackathon - it’s all about building something really quickly without the normal constraints of your job. No compliance breathing down your neck or 10 person meetings to discuss ambiguous “next steps”.
We’re going to focus on showing you how AI tools can help you think of ideas quickly, help you figure out what the steps are to make it a reality, and bring it to life. Google’s new suite of tools lets you do way more than you think, and you probably aren’t using it to their fullest ability.
You don’t need to know how to code, or have ever been to a hackathon, or even used AI tools yourself. We’re going to guide you through brainstorming, showing you how the tools work, and preload templates for you to get started if you need.
You’ll meet healthcare decision makers, get hands-on learning with new AI tools, and potentially bring something back to work that’ll actually help you. At the very least, you’ll get lunch.

the process
Apply
Apply as a team or by yourself: If you’re a team we recommend having one engineer (though it’s not a necessity). If you’re solo, we’ll pair you up with other people (note: you will likely be matched with people from different companies).
We pick teams
Unfortunately we have limited space, so we'll be picking folks using your applications.
We will also match people who applied individually based on interest and industry.

You hack
This is a one-day event: fast and furious. We'll have datasets, Google tools, and some starter problems ready for you to play with.
Lodging
It's just the one day, so no lodging necessary. But I do want to see the famed nap pods...
Frequently Asked Questions
** Where will this be in NYC? **
We’re doing it at the Google's Chelsea Market office in New York! The building entry point is 75 9th Ave, New York, NY 10011. Yes, it’s as nice as you think it is, and yes, you will be able to go to the Cafeteria.
** Does it cost money? **
It’s free! Just keep searching things on Google and use YouTube, please.
** What kinds of projects would be good fits? **
It’s really anything that you can think of, and that’s the beauty of it. Here are a few ideas to get the wheels turning:
- Think about all the tasks that you need to do at least 3-5 times a week that are relatively repetitive.
- What’s a project you would launch at work today if there were no resource constraints?
- What’s a bottleneck that currently exists when two teams need to collaborate today?
- Every faxed lab result, scanned PDF, or referral letter is a human waiting to be helped. Can you teach machines to understand these artifacts the way a coordinator would?

** What if I don’t know how to code or have never been to a hackathon?
For us non-technicals, our time is now. These tools are useful even if you don’t know how to code, and they can actually TELL you what to do if you’re stuck! We’ll guide you through the process so you can do this on your own when you leave the hackathon.
But also…technical people, please apply too. We still need you really badly.
